Amanda's Journey From Pharmacy Into the Field of ABA

Hi! My name is Amanda Gray and I have been in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) for 7 years. I am currently a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB) servicing clients in Polk and Osceola Counties, in Central Florida.

I grew up in South Florida, with parents who both work in the construction field. However, I always wanted to work in the medical field, so after working for my mother's general contracting business after high school, I went to work in a pharmacy in 2007. I spent 10 years learning everything I could in my pharmacy career where I worked as a pharmacy technician (CPhT and RPT) in retail, hospital, compounding, and specialty pharmacy settings; finally ending up in pharmacy safety research. Eventually, I went back to school and graduated from Broward College in 2014 with an Associate's in Biology and Psychology.

In 2016, I pursued a double bachelor's degree in psychology and women's studies with a concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida. During my studies, I fell in love with the concept of ABA, the research-based implementation of behavior modification centered on scientific data, which lead me to begin my journey in ABA therapy as an RBT intern. I graduated from FIU in December 2017.

In May 2018, I pursued a Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis from National University in San Diego, California. Somehow, through working 60 hours a week through covid, I graduated in September 2020.

In April 2021, I relocated from South Florida to Polk County, and am now embracing the country life in Dundee, Florida. I do not miss Miami traffic....

In August 2021, I began pursuing a Ph.D. in ABA from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology at the Washington, D.C. campus.

In October 2021, I passed my BCBA board exam, becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

In March 2022, I became a Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) with the Virginia Board of Medicine.

In March 2023, I became an International Behavior Analyst (IBA) with the International Behavior Analysis Organization (IBAO).

In July 2023, I became a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP)

Outside of Work

When I am not working or studying, you can find me playing with my rescued pitbull Kalypso, being a doting aunt, traveling domestically or internationally, or just outside having fun off-roading my Jeep around our beautiful country.

ABA Team Breakdown

BCBA

BCaBA

BCaBA

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) holds a master’s level degree, while a BCBA-D holds a doctoral degree, and has completed at least 2, 000 clinical hours before becoming certified.

BCBAs are responsible for the supervision and implementation of behavior analytic work to ensure medical necessity and procedural fidelity.

There are checks and balances in place, to make sure ABA policies and ethics are followed to ensure treatment integrity.

BCaBA

BCaBA

BCaBA

A Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA), otherwise known as an Assistant Analyst, holds a bachelor's level degree or a graduate certificate with ABA coursework and has completed at least 1,500 clinical hours before becoming credentialed as a BCaBA.

BCaBAs assist BCBAs with the indirect work that goes into writing and maintaining behavior plans, they also supervisor RBTs, and can provide parent training outside of direct therapy with an RBT.

RBT

BCaBA

RBT

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), sometimes called a Behavior Therapist or Behavior Technician, must be at least 18 years old and hold a high-school diploma. They have to complete an approved 40-hour training course and a subsequent competency evaluation before they can sit for their RBT exam to become credentialed.

RBTs work with the client the most, as they deliver the behavior analytic plan with oversight and guidance from Behavior Analysts.

RBT

A Behavior Assistant (BA) is not credentialed by the BACB. They may be working in ABA, while they are going through the 40-hour training program to become an RBT. Certain insurance companies, do not recognize BAs and require that a credentialed RBT implement the behavior plan under the guidance and supervision of a BCBA/BCaBA

Student Analyst

A Student Analyst is an ABA practitioner that currently holds an RBT or BCaBA credential, but are in a bachelor's or master's, or graduate certificate program to obtain a higher credential. Usually, an RBT pursuing a bachelor's, while taking the required ABA coursework, will be required to complete 1,500 clinical hours before they can apply to become a BCaBA. While a BCaBA, has already completed a bachelor's program and their initial 1,500 clinical hours to become a BCaBA, once they are pursuing a masters level degree, they are required to complete an additional 2,000 clinical hours of ABA supervised fieldwork.
